An Overview of the Correlation DBMS (CDBMS)

How this radically different DBMS information management infrastructure stores 100% indexed data by individual data value for fast performance, total access flexibility and an ultra-compact size without compression.

This white paper explains how the value-based storage (VBS) model used in correlation DBMS (CDBMS) data warehouses provides both exceptional performance and maximum query flexibility without the need to optimize for predefined queries.

The correlation DBMS is a radically different information management infrastructure. It automatically designs and builds data warehouses using a data-generated schema and indexes all data values on the fly while loading, nearly eliminating the need for any predesign. No data correlations are omitted. The correlation DBMS unique value-based storage (VBS) model is what delivers fast performance with the flexibility to design and execute queries that would be very difficult—if not impossible—to model in SQL. Furthermore, because its data-generated schema includes all possible correlations, there is no need to restructure the database to accommodate new types of queries, and new data can be added without redesign.

The VBS model provides a correlation DBMS engine with three key advantages over relational and columnar database approaches:

Query flexibility: A correlation DBMS enables easy creation of queries that are difficult or impossible to model in standard SQL.

Performance: Because it stores each unique value in a data set only once, correlation DBMS data warehouses provide compact size and excellent performance on commodity hardware.

Load speed: The VBS architecture creates its own schema, automatically indexing the correlation DBMS on the fly as data is loaded. There is no need to examine the raw data beforehand and build a database schema before loading the data.

A correlation DBMS (CDBMS) data warehouse has the external appearance of a RDBMS but with additional features and unusual performance characteristics. The physical database size is significantly smaller than either an RDBMS or a column store database. The analytical query performance of a CDBMS data warehouse is faster than any relational structure, and record-oriented operations are faster than column-oriented databases.
